Keeping Tars Safe – Opening Events

Dear Campus Community:

Last week, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings declared a local state of emergency amid rising COVID-19 hospitalizations and infections, and the level of community transmission remains high in our area. As of August 1, the Florida Department of Health reported that Orange County’s 14-day rolling positivity rate is nearly 19 percent.

COVID-19 continues to be a significant threat to our campus community. The Delta variant is aggressive and much more transmissible. As we prepare to welcome students to campus, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to adjust some of our event programming to keep our community safe. A more in-depth orientation schedule will be shared with our incoming and transfer students next week, but at this time we can share that adjustments include:

  • Convocation, SPARC Day, and some of our other orientation and opening programming will be moved outdoors, shift to a smaller group setting, fully shift to a virtual format, or, in some cases, be cancelled.
  • In-person faculty and staff events and retreats will be offered in a virtual setting.

We will share more information separately in communications next week and in town halls with our students, families, faculty and staff.

Here is a link to the Fall 2021 Orientation programming. This will be updated continually as we approach Welcome Week 2021.
