Why Reform?

In 1984, even after nine years of effort, more than 80% of the economy in the south remainedin private hands.

In that same nine years, little economic recovery had been seen in the north.

The radical reformist policies that emerged in these years came from within the leadership of the communist party:


How was it possible for a group of dedicated communist revolutionaries, who had devoted their entire lives to achieving national independence of international capitalism (and its corollary, imperialism), and who were deeply scarred by many years of terrible war, engage in an open debate about and ultimately decide to join the international capitalist system?
