Geography and Population

 1,240 miles long - in the Western hemisphere Vietnam would extend from Miami to Panama

Two great river deltas:

Red River in the north

Mekong River in the south

Together they support about 80% of the population of 76 million

Mountain range cuts through the center of the country

Vietnamese form 85% of the population

Ethnically they are mostly non-Chinese Mongolian and Austro-Indonesian who originally lived in southern China.

 

Language

Vietnamese is a mixture of Malay-Indonesian and Thai with much locally derived

Monotonic and multitonic .

Use of Chinese ideographs until the French produced a romanized writing system: Quoc-ngu. Chinese
ideographs have mostly vanished except in pagodas and temples.
