Almost immediately after signing the cease fire, fighting broke out in SVN as Thieu attacked PRG areas
Nixon resigns as president on August 9, 1974
In early March 1975, NVN launched an offensive designed to take
portions of the northern part of SVN
GVN military weaknesses and political weaknesses quickly emerged
and Thieu was forced to call for a retreat
This retreat instantly turned into a mass military exodus toward
the south
Meanwhile in Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge increased attacks against
the Lon Nol government, scoring big advances
On April 17, Khmer Rouge troops occupy Phnom Penh
On April 30, 1975 the GVN surrendered as communist troops entered
Saigon
