Friedland Associate Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology, Rollins College Wednesday, November 2, 2005, 7:00 pm Bush Auditorium, Rollins College This lecture highlights the treasures of Iraqi cultural heritage and is currently being delivered by lecturers from the AIA as "cultural heritage training" to enlisted members of the US Armed Forces who are scheduled to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan (Dr. Friedland delivered this lecture twice in early June to 400 Marines at Camp Lejeune, NC). The lecture is designed to educate our troops about the "archaeological landscape" that they will encounter and to explain to them why US Central Command is currently spending enormous resources to protect museums and archaeological sites throughout Iraq and Afghanistan. The lecture also touches on how Saddam Hussein co-opted some of the "greatest hits" of Iraqi cultural heritage to support his rule. Finally, the talk demonstrates how organizations such as the Archaeological Institute of America are working to safeguard Iraq's archaeological heritage and how interested attendees can help. For more on the "Troop Lectures," please visit: http://www.archaeological.org/webinfo.php?page=10319. This evening will also feature a brief overview of the AIA's programs. By joining the AIA, you will not only receive Archaeology Magazine and assure that the Central Florida Society continues to receive 3 lectures a year by professional archaeologists from around the world, you will also lend your support to these "Troop Lectures" and the other invaluable programs which the AIA sponsors to "Ensure a Future For the Past" and safeguard the world's archaeological heritage. This phenomenon was recently highlighted and published in the Journal of the American Institute of Conservation (Walter A. Franke and Magda Mircea, 2005, "Plutarch´s report on the blue patina of bronze statues at Delphi: A scientific explanation." JAIC 44: 103-116) and demonstrates the link between recent archaeological work at Delphi, ancient sources, the chemistry of ancient bronze patinas, and art conservation. Professor Bill Personnette, Adjunct Faculty in Rollins College's Department of Chemistry, will also provide input on the chemical aspects of this patina.
